Train Control & Communication TCMS & TCN
The Train Control & Management System (TCMS) is the central on-board platform for the control, monitoring and diagnostics of the key technologies of rolling stock. It handles both safety-critical (vital) and operational (non-vital) functions. The Train Communication Network (TCN) is a standardised on-board communication infrastructure that provides data exchange and interoperability between the individual vehicles in a train set.
The TCMS portfolio comprises three basic architectures. The distributed system uses a vehicle control unit (VCU) and distributed input/output units interconnected via CAN or Ethernet. The modular system combines a central processor unit with communication and I/O units. The 19" subrack system combines a central processor card, communication and I/O cards and a redundant power supply in a single mechanical assembly.
All the architectures are designed with an emphasis on high availability, redundancy of the key elements, rugged operation in rolling stock and support for a wide range of communication protocols. In-house development tools make configuration, integration and adaptation to a specific project easier. The TCMS makes it possible to interconnect the safety-critical and operational functions with other on-board systems, for example the PIS, the VSS and the TCN train communication network.
The TCN solution is based on the international IEC 61375 standard and the UIC 556 specification, and makes it possible to connect vehicles from different manufacturers into a single functional unit. The AMiT Transportation TCN portfolio comprises WTB and MVB gateways, communication modules for MVB and TRDP, passive bus analysers and development tools. The modular TCN architecture makes it possible to combine the WTB, MVB, CAN and Ethernet interfaces according to the requirements of a specific project and to integrate TCN communication directly into customer devices.
The WTB gateways are available in both compact and modular versions and are certified to safety integrity level SIL 2. The TCMS and TCN solutions are suitable for both new vehicles and retrofits of existing fleets.

System products
Distributed, modular and 19" subrack TCMS architectures, and TCN gateways, communication modules and bus analysers
Distributed TCMS
A modular distributed control system for both safety-critical and operational rolling stock applications. The vehicle control units and the distributed I/O modules communicate via the CAN bus, Ethernet or MVB. The architecture is suitable for TCMS applications and for integration with the PIS and VSS systems.
-
Vehicle control unit (VCU)
The central control unit of the distributed TCMS processes the application logic and communicates with the I/O units.
-
Remote I/O units with CAN
Distributed input/output units with a CAN interface allow sensors, actuators and other devices to be connected in the individual parts of the vehicle. The units can be daisy-chained within the CAN bus.
-
Remote I/O units with TRDP
Distributed input/output units with a TRDP interface connect directly to the vehicle Ethernet backbone and transfer both operational and safety data within the distributed TCMS.
-
Fuse module with CANopen
The units protect the electrical circuits of rolling stock and at the same time provide the higher-level control system with up-to-date information about the status of the individual fuses.
Modular TCMS
The modular control system is built from individual functional units that can be flexibly combined according to the requirements of a specific application. The system comprises a central processor unit and various communication, input and output units.
-
Processor unit
The central control unit processes the application logic and communicates with the I/O units.
-
Communication and I/O units
The I/O units allow sensors, actuators and other devices to be connected in the individual parts of the vehicle. The units can be combined as required by the project.
19" subrack TCMS
The subrack system is a modular control platform in a 19" mechanical design. In a single system it combines a central processor card, communication interfaces, I/O cards, a redundant power supply and, where required, communication gateways. The solution is intended primarily for larger TCMS applications that require high availability and easy replacement of the individual modules.
-
Central control unit (VCU) for the subrack
The central processor card controls the subrack system and supports communication via MVB, CAN or Ethernet, depending on the selected variant. Operating temperature range: –40 °C to +70 °C. CRA (Cyber Resilience Act): compliant. Standards: EN 50155, EN 50121-3-2, EN 45545-2.
-
I/O units for the subrack
Input/output cards for the 19" subrack allow digital, analogue and frequency signals to be connected according to the requirements of a specific application.
-
Power supply for the subrack
The power supply module provides stable power to the individual cards and supports a standby backup configuration within the subrack.
Train Communication Network (TCN)
WTB and MVB gateways, communication modules for MVB and TRDP, and passive bus analysers. The TCN products offer a rugged design, a wide operating temperature range and resistance to shock and vibration.
-
WTB gateway
The WTB gateway connects the vehicle to the train bus and provides interoperable communication between the individual vehicles of the train set.
-
MVB gateway
The MVB gateway provides bidirectional data conversion between the MVB bus and an Ethernet or CAN interface. It makes it possible to connect devices without a native MVB interface to the train communication network and to integrate them easily into the on-board architecture of the vehicle.
-
MVB module
The embedded communication module makes it possible to integrate an MVB interface directly into customer devices. It connects to the host processor via a parallel bus, UART, SPI or LPC and supports various types of MVB physical interface.

-
WTB analyser
The compact passive analyser monitors the traffic on the WTB bus and passes the captured data in UDP frames to a computer running the analysis software. It enables efficient diagnostics, development and commissioning of TCN communication without affecting the monitored bus.
-
MVB analyser
The compact passive analyser monitors the traffic on the MVB bus and passes the captured data in UDP frames to a computer. It is intended for the analysis, diagnostics and development of vehicle communication and for support during its commissioning.
Complementary products
For operation, communication, diagnostics and data recording, the TCMS can be complemented with further products from the group's portfolio: panel and vehicle computers, which provide the operation, visualisation and diagnostics of the TCMS; switches and routers, which form the on-board Ethernet network connecting the TCMS, the TCN gateways and other subsystems; and recording devices, which store diagnostic, operational and event data from the TCMS.
